2023 Late Spring Registration for Players Age 4

Co-Ed

Register here for 2023 Farm League

Cost: $65 per player

Dorchester Baseball Farm League

Saturdays April 22 - June 10, 8-10 am (see below - 2 separate 45 minute sessions)

This is our youngest division for 4 year olds (player age as of 08.31.23). This division is pure fun, instructional baseball, where basic fundamentals and techniques are taught.

A soft baseball (usually tennis ball) is used for safety and players hit from a batting Tee.  The players are taught how to throw and catch the baseball and how to run the bases. The first part of the session teaches skills and time permitting an one inning baseball game is played once we start hitting our stride with the kids. The focus is on fun, friendship and teamwork

Note - When your child is at the T a parent or family member ideally stays with your child as there are 5-6 simultaneous active Tees at any one time.  If you are stuck, we will take care of your child's time at the Tee.

The league is been split into 2 sessions (depending on the number of registrants) and each session lasts 45 minutes.  Last year, the sessions were on Saturday mornings 8-45 & 9-945 AM at Garvey Park.  This year's location will depend on field availability but we are hoping for Garvey in Neponset and/or McConnell in Savin Hill.

Players can attend either session, but will be assigned one randomly at the beginning of the season to give out uniforms/hats and to try to balance the player load - we expect 50 players so ideally,  25 at each.  All players will receive a hat and team shirt.  Parental participation at Tee station is needed, however,  any one helping out/volunteering beyond working with your own child at the Tee station must be registered through the website so that the required background check can be completed.

If you want to your child to have the same color shirt as a friend, please take that initiative when we distribute shirts.  At this level, we are able to be the most flexible and accomodating than any other division of play.

Equipment - sneakers are fine, a small inexpensive very flexible glove helps (but at age 4 we do alot of catching with no glove)...dress for the weather.

COVID-19 - it is too early to define our protocols, but hopefully things will be alot better in the spring!  The league is blessed with a dedicated COVID-19 Coordinator, Samantha Ciarroco, who will develop any program for the Board's review/approval.

BRING YOUR CAMERAS TO CATCH YOUR CHILD'S JOY FILLED MOMENTS - of course there are always some tears, shyness, clinging to mom/dad - that is all part and parcel of what our dedicated volunteers are used to.

T Ball

What is Tee-ball?

Dorchester Baseball’s Tee Ball program is a co-ed entry-level sport designed to introduce emerging players aged 5-6 (league age as of 8.31 of each year) to the game of baseball, to being part of a team and community in a fun and safe environment. We hope to grow a player’s love for baseball while planting the seed of fitness and fundamentals into the 11 week season.

Players join tee-ball with varying levels of athletic abilities. We don’t expect players to be able to catch a ball at the beginning of a season, this is in part due to the development of ‘binocular vision’ happening around age 7, so missing a thrown ball at the tee-ball level is not due to lack of athleticism but the hope is that players start to learn the skills for when depth perception develops.

Players will also find interest in other things happening in their environment during games and practices. This does not mean they aren’t paying attention or having fun. It is perfectly normal for children to explore the world while out in center field. Our volunteer coaches will provide gentle reminders to encourage safety when players get distracted by Grandpa in the stand or a cool bug while in left field.

Everybody hits and plays the field!

Players will learn how to hit off a tee, run bases, and play every fielding position to get players gloves-onknowledge of where all the fielding positions are located (though sometimes children migrate around the field and that is OK!).

Games occur on Saturday mornings, are scheduled to start between 9:00a and 11:00a, and typically last an hour. Each game consists of 3-4 innings and innings change after every player on a team has had a chance to bat.

Don’t expect a final score, we don’t have “outs” so we can encourage players learning the fundamentals of the game early on in their baseball development.

Equipment

While soccer or baseball cleats will work, any athletic shoe (sneaker) will do! The best glove is often the cheapest as they tend to be softer, more flexible, and more comfortable. Hand-me-down gloves work great!

Baseball pants look great but are also not necessary - have your player wear whatever they will be comfortable moving around in.

Tee-balls are soft and we use a lot of tennis balls in practice to get players comfortable with balls being thrown their way.

Every player will be provided a hat and team shirt. The league will provide balls, helmets and bats for team use. We also have the ability to provide baseball gloves to player if needed.

Majors

The Majors is DLL’s highest and most competitive level of play. All 12-year-olds are placed in this division, and the remaining slots are filled with 11- and 10-year-olds, starting with the highest evaluation scores and working down until all teams are filled.

At this level players are allowed to steal bases, run to first base on a dropped third strike, and bunt among other advanced concepts. And you will see some great plays being made in the field defensively!

A week typically features two weeknights of baseball (combination of games and/or practice), as well as a game on Saturday morning.  Games and practices typically last 1.5 to 2

hours. Practices will start in the month of April. The regular season will take place from late April to early June, culminating with playoffs in mid-June with an end date typically around the time school lets out for the summer.

Teams will hit through the entire lineup, and players will play at least 3 innings in the field (though many coaches try to do better than that when they can).

At this level, due to the advanced level of play, and strategy involved, players may not play each position. A requisite level of skill is required for certain positions. That said, many of our coaches try to find opportunities to give all of their players a chance to play multiple positions when they can, provided that players may safely do so. There are several teams that give all players who want to, the opportunity to pitch in a game for example.

AAA

A good way to think of AAA is “Majors Lite” or “Majors B”. After the Majors division is filled, slots are filled with players aged 8 through 11 starting with the players with the highest remaining evaluation scores and working down until all teams are filled. All 11-year-olds who did not get assigned to the Majors will play in AAA.

At this level players are allowed to steal bases except home. There is no dropped third strike rule. There is some strategy involved, but you will see less bunting, set baserunning and defensive plays etc. than you will in the Majors.

A requisite level of skill is required for certain positions. That said, many coaches try to find opportunities to give all of their players a chance to learn different positions in practice and play multiple positions when they can, provided that players may safely do so.

AA

After the Majors and AAA divisions are filled, slots in AA are filled with players aged 7 through 10 starting with the players with the highest remaining evaluation scores and working down until all teams are filled. All 8-, 9- and 10-year-olds who did not get assigned to the Majors or AAA will play in AA.

This level is part player-pitch and part coach-pitch when needed. The pitchers’ mound is moved forward 3 feet. There is no stealing, bunting or other advanced concepts of play, and there will be a larger emphasis of instruction within games, however there will still be competitive 6 inning games, with scores and standings kept. This level is perfect for kids who are suited by a less intense and stressful competitive environment, or for those who are still developing their basic fundamental skills. This level is designed to prepare kids to graduate to AAA, though it is not out of the question to see age eligible kids make the jump from AA to Majors in the following season with a lot of practice and dedication.

A

The jump from the T-ball program to Single A is made as fun and enjoyable as best we can. Our young players seemed to enjoy a sense for being on the real diamond and experiencing a bit more of the real feel of participating in little big baseball.

The first 2 weeks our time together are teaching based clinics with an element of evaluation by this so that we can arrive at three or four teams that are generally equal.

Once the season starts, we ask that coaches to have at least one practice per week and that would be coupled with one game per week in two games every other week. Practices are typically held at the convenience of the coach in close communication with parents.

Games are held on Saturdays typically between nine and three, and usually last 60-90 minutes once the game starts.

We use the ball rather than a hardball and find that our players very much enjoy this.

Our program is primarily coach pitch. This keeps the games and players moving, allows for more hitting, player fun and enjoyment of the game. As appropriate our coaches will do their best to give players an opportunity to pitch from the mound.

We will make an effort to have skill clinics as time and volunteer participation allow.
